What is melamine wood?
If you're searching for "What is melamine wood?" or "Is melamine waterproof?" you might be looking for new cabinets or melamine cabinet drawers, or you might be looking for plates, floors, or even dry erase boards. Melamine is a laminated product, a common hard resin covering that can be heated to plywood or MDF. It is a highly durable thermoset plastic that was originally an organic compound combined with formaldehyde.
Laminate with melamine
Melamine is a type of laminate, but not all laminates are made of melamine. Laminate is a description of a product in which a layer or laminate is applied to a substrate such as plywood or MDF. Melamine laminate is made by molding a formaldehyde/melamine combination into a single piece of durable plastic. Melamine is made by a process that applies a pressure of about 300 to 500 pounds per square inch. This pressure makes melamine a low pressure laminate (LPL). Formica is another type of laminate that is formed using higher pressures, up to 1,400 pounds per square inch.
The benefits of melamine for construction
Properly installed melamine is a long-lasting, inexpensive and durable option. Although melamine is waterproof, if installed improperly, water can enter the interior wood, causing the melamine to warp. Melamine's durability makes it a favorite, but it has the potential to shatter if not properly installed.
Wide choice - Melamine produces a wide variety of finishes and colours.
EXCELLENT DURABILITY - Melamine is water, shatter and scratch resistant.
Affordable - Melamine covers less expensive wood products such as MDF or plywood.
What is made of melamine?
Melamine is a widely used product in many industries. It is used in kitchen cabinets, display cases, office furniture, dry erase boards, and even cutlery like cutlery and bowls. Melamine has become a popular building material because it provides an attractive and durable finish to other lower quality materials. While most of us prefer solid wood cabinets, melamine offers a more affordable option that is lightweight, convenient and cost-effective.
How melamine is made
A special type of kraft paper that won't get wet or tear even when saturated, soaked in a resin called phenol. The resin is absorbed into the paper and then goes into a drying oven to cure. Then roll the paper into a roll. At this point the solid color or decorative layer melamine is divided into two production lines. The solid color melamine is then coated with additional resin, while the melamine with the printed design is combined with a melamine overlay.
under pressure and high temperature
Once these products are ready, they are sent to the press. When the laminate sections are placed in the press, a metal plate is placed between them to prevent the layers from sticking to each other. Under high temperature and pressure, decorative laminate and saturated melamine craft paper are made into melamine laminate. Metal sheets set up as layer stacks prior to pressing may contain wood grain or stone grain designs. After pressing, the laminate is fully cured. When combined with MDF or plywood substrates, the finishing line trims and sands the sheets to ensure proper adhesion.
Composite laminate is made of thick black laminate, kraft paper and 2 decorative layers stacked. Composite laminates are so thick that they can be used to provide structural support without the addition of plywood or MDF.
